Sector Risk Monthly: Healthcare

The healthcare sector in Colombia faces its most important challenge in recent history because of COVID-19, which came in the midst of a political turmoil due to cabinet-level changes at the Health Ministry. The lack of infrastructure and medical equipment are elements of concern as the country is not yet ready to face the novel coronavirus.

Colombia, which on April 26 will finish its month-long mandatory isolation, will have to hurry in order to prepare its hospitals and healthcare infrastructure for what is to come, else it must examine alternatives to deal with soaring contagion numbers.

Other priorities in the healthcare agenda include important issues that likely to have repercussions for the sector: the regulation of prices for medicines, the approval of in vitro fertilization processes for couples through the EPS, and the discussion on the decriminalization of abortion.
