Local Elections 2023

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

On October 29, 2023, Colombians head to the voting polls. Seats for 32 governors, 418 departmental deputies, 1102 mayors, and more than 12,000 city council members are up for election. The central question during the elections is continuity or change.

The elections will become an unofficial referendum on the Petro administration and its management of the country during the first year in office. We also expect the elections to be marked by an increase in political violence, a vacuum of information due to a lack of polling and media coverage in rural areas, and additional political disarray considering Colombia’s growingly fragmented party system. With so much at stake, the government is keenly aware that the electoral results will not only impact its own political standing but also shape the direction of Colombia's political trajectory during the remainder of Petro´s term and are a bellwether for the outcome of the presidential election in 2026.
